Chiefs eye next hurdle

Chiefs eye next hurdle

Johannesburg - While Kaizer Chiefs continue to blaze a trail through the Premiership uncontested, coach Stuart Baxter is plotting a way to keep his players's mental focus in check.
Chiefs totally outclassed arch-rivals Orlando Pirates 2-0 at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.
With the Amakhosi having proven by some margin that they are the best team in the league so far, Baxter knows that the home-stretch remains some way off.
"There is still a long way to go before we can start celebrating because nothing has been won yet," Baxter said.
In the comprehensive victory at the mecca of football in the country, Chiefs put on a show in the second half that put their foes to the sword.
Victory came courtesy of goals from Siphiwe Tshabalala in the 51st minute and Siphelele Mthembu in injury time.

Another tough game
Baxter said their joy would be short-lived as they would turn their attention to their next match against Platinum Stars on Tuesday.
"Obviously we're very pleased with the derby win. But we have another tough game around the corner and we have to make sure we are ready for it."
While Chiefs are revelling in the splendour of an impressive run of form, Pirates are still searching for their silver -lining.
With their former coach Vladimir Vermezovic having abandoned ship on the eve of the derby and dealing with the trauma of captain Senzo Meyiwa, who was shot dead in late October – the players have had a challenging season to say the least.
Against their old foe, the Buccaneers could not muster enough of a resistance to overcome the Chiefs freight train.
Chiefs are unbeaten in the league so far in 14 matches – having won 11 and drawn three.
Chiefs' Tshabalala operated like a maestro in the midfield that the Pirates defence could not contain. The tricky winger and his teammates exploited the open spaces left by the disjointed Pirates defence.

Intention to outplay

A cagey first-half was followed by an exhilarating second that saw Chiefs shift gears and show their superiority.
The game came to life in the second half after the pep-talks from the coaches at the interval.

Chiefs came out strong, with the intention to outplay their arch-rivals with a hard running style of play.

Tshabalala, Bernard Parker, Mandla Masango and Reneilwe Letsolonyane exposed the Pirates defence with their fluid play off the ball into dangerous spaces.

Caretaker coach Eric Tinkler, who took over from Vermezovic, was thrown into the deep end with a tough first assignment being the derby.

Tinkler admitted that these were trying times for the team.
"We have come through a very rough period of a month and a half and the morale of the team has been very low," Tinkler said.

"The confidence has been very low and it was important that we try to turn that around."

Creating chances
Tinkler felt that his team's lack of firepower allowed Chiefs to get settled into the game.
"Chiefs are a well oiled machine and they have been playing well in the last couple of months.
"They have been creating a lot of chances and I felt they found a lot of pockets in our defence. At halftime I also spoke about closing those spaces."
With less than a week on the job, Tinkler said his task was to get the team to turn over a new lease on life.
"Now what's left is to work hard at training to try and improve that morale and spirit and the belief, confidence that is currently lacking in the squad. It is important we bounce back as soon as possible

Pitso focused only on Sundowns

Pitso focused only on Sundowns

Johannesburg - Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane says he is paying no mind to Kaizer Chiefs' stunning Premiership form, preferring instead to focus on his own team's ambitions.
The reigning PSL champions hoisted themselves to second in the top-flight standings on Saturday following their 2-0 win over Free State Stars, although they remain 13 points behind runaway leaders Amakhosi, who beat Orlando Pirates by the same scoreline.
Mosimane, though, is uninterested in the results of the other clubs in South Africa and is focusing solely on the job at hand, which to the tactician is bettering the points tally that handed Sundowns the Premiership crown last term.
"Our objective is to go over 65 points...that's what we fighting for.  We don't worry about anyone else; we don't worry about what we can't control...we need to beat our own record (from last season)," Mosimane said.
"In football, once you start thinking you arrived, that's when you make mistakes. Sundowns is playing very well all the time. Once Sundowns gets the result and the goals, we look a different team.
"The confidence is starting to come slowly and we are scoring goals."

We played well - Cazorla

Champions League

We played well - Cazorla

Cape Town - Arsenal have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League for the 15th successive season as Yaya Sanogo's first goal for the club and a gem from Alexis Sanchez clinched a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.
Arsene Wenger's side were desperately in need of a morale-boosting European victory after back-to-back defeats against Swansea and Manchester United left them well adrift in the English Premiership title race.

Santi Cazorla spoke to the media after Arsenal's 2-0 win against Borussia Dortmund at Emirates Stadium.

Here is what Cazorla had to say (via the Arsenal Player):
On how important the result was:
It was an important result for us to qualify. With this result we have qualified. We have another game against Galatasaray but the team played well today.
On the first goal:
The first goal was important for us. Sanogo played very well today and had a good combination with me. The most important thing was that he scored it and that’s very, very important for the team.
On lifting the pressure off their backs:
The team pressed high today. We had a good spirit and we played very well. We need to continue to play like we did in this game and we need to focus on the league again.
On finishing top of Group D:
It’s very important because you can play against teams that aren’t Barcelona or Real Madrid when you finish first. It’s difficult because Dortmund lost and now they play at home, whereas we go to Galatasaray away. We want to win the last game.
On Alexis Sanchez:
Alexis is very important for us. He is in good form for the team and I hope he continues to play the same. He’s a very important player for us.

Zanu-PF congress ends, deputies not announced
Zanu-PF congress ends, deputies not announced
Zimbabwe's longtime President Robert Mugabe says said he did not want to "rush to choose people" as he closed his party congress without announcing who his two vice presidents will be.
Harare - A subdued Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe on Sunday made a call for unity after months of bitter fighting within the ruling Zanu-PF party.
"Our survival as a nation... lies in our transcendental unity," Mugabe, 90, told mourners at the state funeral of a senior member of his party.
"Only with unity can we succeed," he added, speaking 15 hours after he ended a marathon Zanu-PF congress that saw him confirmed as party leader and candidate for the next elections in 2018. He has been in power in Zimbabwe since 1980.
His wife Grace, dressed in black, was also at the funeral of central committee member Kotsho Dube, who died on Monday.
Late on Saturday, Mugabe confirmed he had no intention of retiring from the presidency, vowing: "I am there for as long as I still have some strength in me.
"And I thank God for having given me extra strength. I'll work as hard as possible. For as long as I'm still sane and fully bright in mind, and I think I still have a good memory and a good catchment area in my mind, I will do my best.
"I still have the willpower. I know our history perhaps much more than you do," said Mugabe.
At one point in his speeches at the congress he got slightly confused and chanted: "Pasi neZanu-PF" (Down with Zanu-PF)".
State media on Sunday claimed Mugabe "chose not to succumb to populist pressure" when he did not name at the congress his two new vice presidents, or even confirm that his vice president Joice Mujuru, 59, had definitely been demoted.
Mujuru has been the butt of a vitriolic campaign fronted by Grace - now the new head of the Zanu-PF women's league - who wanted to see the army general's widow demoted. Mujuru and her allies were accused of corruption and plotting to assassinate Mugabe, charges they deny.
Mujuru boycotted the congress, but reappeared briefly on Sunday morning when she went to pay her respects to the late Dube as his body lay in state at the iconic Stoddard Hall building in Mbare, Harare's oldest township, ahead of his burial.
Sources said army chiefs guarding his body stood to attention as she entered the building.
At the burial Mugabe said: "Peace, peace, peace must be allowed to grow roots."

Nigeria: 150+ killed in Boko Haram dawn raid

Nigeria: 150+ killed in Boko Haram dawn raid

Kano - More than 150 people, including 38 police, died in a Boko Haram raid on the northeast Nigerian city of Damaturu this week, police, a rescue official and a health worker told AFP on Wednesday.
A senior rescue official and a medical source at the city's Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital said 115 bodies were brought to the morgue after Monday's attack, although it was not clear whether they were insurgents or civilians.
All 115 were in civilian clothing, but it was not certain whether they were all non-combatants, the sources said. Among the dead were two medical doctors, a staff member of the federal polytechnic in the Yobe state capital, and his two children.
Six soldiers were also killed, the sources added. Emmanuel Ojukwu, spokesperson for Nigeria's federal police, said: "Out of the police, we have 38 deaths."
Suicide bombers
Most of the police killed were at the mobile police base in the Gujba Road area of the city, Ojukwu said, confirming eye-witness testimony from residents that the facility was attacked.
One local man, Umar Sada, said at the time that the gunmen, who began their attack at about 04:45 on Monday, burnt down the police barracks.
The heavy loss of life came after an increase in mass casualty attacks blamed on the militants, who have been fighting since 2009 to establish a hardline Islamic state in northeast Nigeria.
Also on Monday, two female suicide bombers blew themselves up at a market in the Borno state capital, Maidiguri - less than a week after two other women killed more than 45 at the same location.
Rescue teams
Last Friday, two suicide bombers and gunmen killed at least 120 worshippers at the central mosque in the northern city of Kano, which has been repeatedly hit by Boko Haram attacks in the past.
Neither the military nor the state government in Yobe said they were in a position to comment on the casualty figures when contacted by AFP.
But civilian vigilantes operating in Damaturu claimed on Monday that more than 40 Boko Haram gunmen had been killed in the fighting.
The medical source said it was "likely" that most of the 115 were insurgents.
He added: "Rescue teams are still looking in the bush around the city for more bodies. It's believed that people might have died from gunshot wounds while trying to flee."
The senior rescue official said 78 people were injured. Of those 53 were treated and discharged.

In the last 2 days Boko Haram have slaughtered nearly 200 people and there is silence from the international community ... What are our leaders doing to help the Nigerians deal with this problem ? This cannot go on any longer surely there must be a solution to these acts of barbarism .

kill each other black barbarics fuelled by islamic hatred nogal its all africans have been famous for since the first african country ghana got independence in 1957, killing each other selling citizens to neo capitalists, human traffikers and drug lords for a pair of shoes like jackie selebi, defrauding their countries some like Idi Amin even resorting to literally eating his people what a disgrace...nigerians even boast an education better than ours but for more than half a century they still cant explore, drill and ship their oil without Shell to hell with our black leaders they are a useless bunch that is corrupt to the core and will never change
avatar
Bongani Hlongwa - December 3, 2014 at 20:25
I totally agree with you Themba; and what further aggravates matters and frustrate our capable and intelligent potential leaders, is this one man one vote system; which regardless of the ignorance and stupidity of a person, allows that person to vote. These types of voters, who are accidentally in the majority, put in power incompetent people as leaders of our countries. This then, more often than not, results in our countries being led by useless and incompetent leaders.

Bongani Hlongwa - December 3, 2014 at 20:39
Shame on the Nigerian government for failing to protect its people. I am surprised at why their president is not dissolving this incompetent government and calling for the new elections, which I believe will result in a more competent government put in power there.
